Summary

The history of the Targaryens comes to life in this Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen--the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria--took up residence on Dragonstone。 Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart。

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What were Maegor the Cruel's worst crimes? What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel。 Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed。

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire & Blood is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros。

Frankly, I'm a little disappointed in the way the story was written; it definitely was not as good as the Game of Thrones novels in my opinion。 Still, I wanted to get a clue on what was coming in the new HBO series。 Frankly, I'm a little disappointed in the way the story was written; it definitely was not as good as the Game of Thrones novels in my opinion。 Still, I wanted to get a clue on what was coming in the new HBO series。 。。。more

I enjoyed reading the stories of each King that sat on the iron throne until Aegon III。 However, the book is very dry at certain stages and VERY detailed (great if you're into that kind of thing)。 Overall, it was worth the read! This is a pretty cool book although it's written very differently from the other GoT novels。 I think like most people I would prefer that GGRM just write the other GoT books instead of worrying about stuffl ike this though。 This is a pretty cool book although it's written very differently from the other GoT novels。 I think like most people I would prefer that GGRM just write the other GoT books instead of worrying about stuffl ike this though。 。。。more

Between the indefinite delay of "The Winds of Winter" and the disappointing ending of the "Game of Thrones" TV show, I've been pretty much done with the whole Song of Ice and Fire thing。But the fact is there are very few fantasy shows for adults, so I finally decided, "ugh, I'll give the 'House of the Dragon' a chance" followed by "I should probably read 'Fire and Blood' since that's what it's drawing from。"Is this the Song of Ice and Fire book I wanted? Nope。 Is it still enjoyable? Nope。 Is it still enjoyable? Yes。 Told in a pseudo historical narrative, "Fire and Blood" tracks the beginning of those messy, dragon-loving, incesty Targaryens from the conquering of Westeros to the immediate aftermath of the Targaryen civil war known as The Dance of Dragons。 Yes, it is definitely tricky keeping track of all these names sometimes and not every chapter is as interesting as another, but I really did like it overall。 I just tried to take this as its own thing and not let my feelings on the main series (or lack thereof) color my perception of this book。Of course, we may never get the second part of THIS book either, but y'know, I'll take what I can get。 。。。more

We've all been there right, building a huge ancient breathing world for your literary masterpiece and you have all this backstory lying around。 You can't just leave it lying around are it will spoil so you have to publish it asap。 The backstory is has many similar flavors as the masterpiece and hints of foreshadowing, but the flavor all in all is unique enough to be a satisfying meal。 Would eat again。 We've all been there right, building a huge ancient breathing world for your literary masterpiece and you have all this backstory lying around。 You can't just leave it lying around are it will spoil so you have to publish it asap。 The backstory is has many similar flavors as the masterpiece and hints of foreshadowing, but the flavor all in all is unique enough to be a satisfying meal。 Would eat again。 。。。more

Hurried to finish before Season 1 of House of the Dragon premieres tonight! This book was generally what I expected it to be。 A chronological timeline from Aegon the Conqueror until a few years after the Dance of the Dragons (which is where the TV series will center)。 Of course all set hundreds of years before the main series。 It was great to listen to the Targaryen history, the first part of it anyway, as to my knowledge this is to be 1 of 2-3 parts。 It is similar to a history textbook, but ove Hurried to finish before Season 1 of House of the Dragon premieres tonight! You can’t rate this book compared to Martin’s other novels because it’s not written anything like it。 It’s written as a history book basically where a Maester is just telling the story of the Targaryen kings that came before ASOIF。 I thought that it was pretty fun and interesting although it did start to slog for me towards the end。 This book might be better if you just read about one king at a time and then switched to a different book in between。

Reads like a history/lineage book and that works for me。 Gives a nice breakdown leading up to Game of Thrones with a colorful introduction to all the characters。 Martin does a good job as usual。

Excellent violence, betrayal, royal incest, and much more。 Finished just in time for the HBO premiere tonight。

I initially read this book in 2019 after the conclusion of the television show Game of Thrones。 I wasn't ready to say goodbye to these characters in Westeros。 It took me a month to read it the first time。 Fast forward to present day and I finished reading it in 6 days。 My reread came about in preparation for the the new show House of the Dragon based on Fire & Blood。 Second time around did the trick。 Its still a dense read but having the cast of the show in my mind made this a more exciting read I initially read this book in 2019 after the conclusion of the television show Game of Thrones。 I wasn't ready to say goodbye to these characters in Westeros。 It took me a month to read it the first time。 Fast forward to present day and I finished reading it in 6 days。 My reread came about in preparation for the the new show House of the Dragon based on Fire & Blood。 Second time around did the trick。 Its still a dense read but having the cast of the show in my mind made this a more exciting reading experience。 As opposed to the first time it felt like a chore to turn the pages in a history text book。 These Targaryen's & their dragons keep you enthralled with their drama and behavior from generation to generation。 。。。more

Impressively comprehensive "history" of Westeros。 Not as dry as I expected。 In fact, despite the Targaryens taking front and center stage, it was fun to reenter the world of the Song of Ice and Fire books and learn about the previous exploits of the major families that readers loved to love/hate。 This somehow seemed more violent and gory (in sheer number of violent acts, anyway) than the SOIAF novels, yet less upsetting because we're not attached to any of the characters。 The history text book t Impressively comprehensive "history" of Westeros。 Not as dry as I expected。 In fact, despite the Targaryens taking front and center stage, it was fun to reenter the world of the Song of Ice and Fire books and learn about the previous exploits of the major families that readers loved to love/hate。 This somehow seemed more violent and gory (in sheer number of violent acts, anyway) than the SOIAF novels, yet less upsetting because we're not attached to any of the characters。 The history text book theme results in the events being fleshed out, but the characters。。。 Not so much。 Still, this book exceeded my expectations。 。。。more

Not a fan of the chronicle format。 It felt like a set up or a companion to the show。
